F-tech Solar 7 Bluetooth GPS Receiver

Published by Budda June 9th, 2005 in Gadgets, Bluetooth, Communication, PDA, GPS.

Solar GPS

Combine a Bluetooth GPS receiver that most of the time sits on top of a car dashboard anyway, with an integrated solar panel and, you have the longest battery life possible.

The device uses the Trimble FirstGPS chipset which stores satellite data upon start up and updates the positioning every ten minutes. This ensures that if you turn it off and then back on in the same general location, your Time-To-First-Fix (TTFF) is much lower. This is something which puts this GPS locator above a lot of the current models available out there.

The Solar 7 is one of the largest GPS receivers, not because it has a large capacity battery but the solar panel needs to have a certain surface area to be effective.

The standard-size 3.7V Lithium-Ion battery has an endurance of about 20 hours and the solar charge will boost that to 30 hours.

Priced at around $150 - $170 USD.
