NDS Gets Movies
Published by Budda July 30th, 2005 in Gadgets, Entertainment, Consoles & Video Gaming, Portable Video, Handhelds.Since the Sony PSP got movies to play back on the device, and studios scrambling to release movies on the special PSP UMD disc format it now seems Nintendo want a piece of the action.
the ability to purchase movies on DS cartridges. Apparently, Nintendo is using DivX to compress movies into files that can be played directly from DS cartridges, without the need of an accessory.
This would be much like Sony’s movies on UMD except with no moving parts. Presumably, the DS software could run a touch-screen interface to jog through the movie and adjust volume, much like an iPod wheel. A single cartridge should be able to hold more than two hours of video.
Kotaku reports the first movie to hit the DS will be an animated feature from Pixar or Disney.
A price is expected to be around $20 a movie.
