Nintendo DS WiFi Launch Date Set (for USA)
Published by Budda October 6th, 2005 in Gadgets, Wireless, Wi-Fi, Consoles & Video Gaming, Handhelds.Nintendos WiFi service draws closer. “For the first time, characters from the Nintendo universe will be playable online, as part of a unique wireless community, accessible inside or outside the home,” Nintendo said in a statement.
It’s official - the service, dubbed Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, will launch in the US on November 14, 2005.
From home, if the user already has a Wi-Fi network, the Nintendo DS unit will connect directly to it with minimal setup procedures. Those who have a high-speed Internet connection such as cable or DSL, but no wireless network, can use the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector, sold separately, that will plug into a computer USB port to create a wireless access point to connect to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
Outside of the home, players will be able to connect in a variety of ways, including at thousands of free Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection hotspots nationwide.
Nintendo DS games like Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing: Wild World and Metroid Prime Hunters will require no additional charge for online play. Each is scheduled to launch in the coming months, along with the first third-party title using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, Activision’s Tony Hawk’s American SK8Land, developed by Vicarious Visions.
Mario Kart DS and Tony Hawk’s American Sk8land will ship on November 14th to kick off the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection in the US. Mario Kart DS will support four player over the internet; racers can pick opponents from their roster of friends, match up randomly against strangers of comparable skill levels or simply choose to race against anyone in the world. American Sk8land will feature head-to-head play, enabling players to create custom art for boards and tags as well as track high scores and stats.
Nintendo has taken the online video gaming model and rewritten the definition of community,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales & marketing. “With easy setup and no added service fees, players far and wide will log in and play with one another as easily as if they were sitting in the same room.”

This sounds pretty good. It’s 3 months late of the PSP’s Internet Service (which debuted with the system’s firmware 2.01 update), but it should do good. As an American gamer, I think this is good news. I hope you British gamers recieve the services on the same day as we do. This is best news I’ve heard involving the DS. I do have a space on msn, if you want to look at it. It is: http://spaces.msn.com/member/dsclub/. I like your coverage of Nintendo WiFi Connection, and I compliment you on your website.
I don’t understand what the wi-fi thing means could someone what the bare necessities are for playing wirelessly ( like world wide) I have a wireless router it that all you need? that would be awesome
You should just need a wifi access point, and internet connection and some wifi multiplayer games to get going with the DS. No cost involved for Nintendo games, although 3rd party publishers may set up some charged for system to play their games on-line in the future.
