Sony Ericsson today officially announced the P990 global wireless-everything smartphone powered by Symbian OS 9.1 and UIQ 3 software platform.

The Sony Ericsson P990 is the latest P-series Symbian smartphone from Sony Ericsson, following on from the successful P800, P900 and P910 models.

With WiFi (802.11b), 3G UMTS device in addition to tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900) and GPRS, Bluetooth, 2 megapixel camera phone with “photo light” and video calling, FM tuner, Mp3 and MPEG4 playback, QWERTY, QWERTZ, AZERTY, or Russian keyboard what flips down, the P990 is destined for all markets.

Memory has been extended in order to handle all multi-media downloads and e-mail attachments. Memory Stick PRO Duo up to 4GB will be available in the market at launch and the P990 now has up to 80MB user free memory. A 64 MB Memory Stick Duo is included in the box preloaded with a VPN client and trial version of a virus scan package.

The screen resolution is now 240×320 pixel touchscreen in 262,000 colours.
Its 2 megapixel camera will feature auto-focus and digital zoom. It will support both images and video.

It’s quite a large device, at 114×57x25mm and 155 grams. 3G talktime is up to 3 hours, with 9 hours maximum talktime on GSM. Standby time is up to 12 days (3G) or 16 days (GSM).

“The technical prowess of the P990 will be brought to full life by applications from the third party developer community,” said Jan Wäreby, executive vice president. “Demand for applications on the P800, P900 and P910 has been very high. Our smartphones have been recognised as the most advanced and useful on the market.”

Expected to start shipping in Q1 2006 to Europe, Middle East, Asia and Africa as the P990i, and to mainland China as the P990c. There is no word of a North American variant.

Finally! My P900 is on it’s last legs. Glad I am not living in North America.

Unfortunately this is still not available in the UK market. What’s going wrong? They have pulled out P910 but it is still shown on operator catalogues.
