uConnect VoIP Converter for Skype
Published by Budda November 21st, 2005 in Gadgets, Computing, Communication, Home, VOIP.You’ve heard about this amazing new technology that allows you to make free calls from computer to computer and mega-cheap calls to land lines and mobiles. The trouble is you don’t want to buy one of these newfangled phones that makes the whole shebang possible.
The uConnect VoIP Converter is a little box of electronic jiggery-pokery allows you to take advantage of VoIP technology using your existing phone - whether it’s analogue, DECT or even the old cordless.
The uConnect takes the analogue signal from your traditional phone and converts it into digital data for transmission over the Internet.
You’ll ideally need Broadband to get the best from uConnect and it goes without saying that your computer has to be switched on to take advantage of the VoIP function. When the PC is off, the phone will route all your outgoing calls over the traditional BT/cable phone line.
When it comes to incoming calls, your phone will automatically ring as if it’s your standard phone. Which it still is.
If you’ve got a DECT phone you’ll even get a nifty caller display feature telling you if you’re getting an inbound Skype call and who it’s from: ‘S’ for Skype followed by their Skype username!
To get going you’ll need to sign up for a free Skype account, but the package includes a voucher for 30 minutes free Skype voucher to get your started. They’ve also kindly thrown in 2 months free Skype Voicemail too.
The uConnect converter also makes use of the SkypeOut service. It provides a low cost way to make calls from Skype to friends who still use those traditional landlines or mobile phones. That means calling anyone, anywhere in the world at local rates.
The uConverter adapter is available from Firebox.com for £34.95.

Great idea and I love Skype and use it every day to phone people I work with and friends, but I brought the Linksys VOIP phone and love that as it’s a dedicated solution, the only downside would be that the phone I got costs £75 and the above device cost a lot less…depends if you’re on a budget.
