Find me - childs whereabouts via text

Published by GadgetSpy January 24th, 2006 in Gadgets, Communication, Mobile Phones.

child locate

Following on from our recent article about the free Teddyphone it’s evident that parents want to check their child is safe via technology. Childlocate have a product which allows you to track where you child is via text with accuracy of up to 150m in urban area.

ChildLocate has developed a new service which allows lost or worried children to text ‘Find Me’ to a central number when they feel they’re in danger. Within seconds parents receive an alerting text message followed by the location of their child.

“Children who find themselves in situations where they feel at risk can discreetly make their whereabouts known to their parents and the fact they want to be found.” Once parents receive an alert, they can contact their child - or, if they are unable to establish contact, the vital information provided could prove to be of significant importance. Crucially, instead of just being able to trace the mobile phone, Find Me provides proof of where a child was when he or she last made contact.

Here are some answers from the FAQs which we thought were relevant:

Can you locate children with ChildLocate if the mobile phone is switched off?
The child’s mobile phone needs to be switched on for ChildLocate to provide a real-time location on your child.
If the phone is switched off, then we will show you the last known location of the mobile handset if the handset is with the Vodafone, Orange or T-Mobile network. That would be the last time a call or text message was last received by or made from the mobile phone. No location information is provided by 02 if the phone is switched off.

What do I need to subscribe to the ChildLocate service?
You need the following:
* Valid UK address
* Mobile phone (optional)
* Credit Card
* Access to the internet

On which networks is the service available
We can currently locate children with mobile phones on Vodafone, o2, T-Mobile, Orange, Tesco Mobile, BT Mobile, Fresh and Easy Mobile (service is not available on mobiles on Virgin Mobile or 3).

How do you prevent unauthorized people from tracking my children?
It is impossible for anyone to gain access to the service and locate your children without you knowing about it. As soon as an additional user gains access to the service you are notified on your mobile phone.
