Have a Sling box, for free

Orb on a mobile

Getting you TV, where you want it, has long been ruled by Sling Media - the guys behind the nifty Slingbox we covered last year. Although it does a great job, you may not be able to afford it. We have the answer.

A company called Orb are offering the same “video casting” facilities as the Slingbox for free, forever.

The software lets you transmit your TV, audio, photo galleries and video from a base PC to any device which has a web browser (and an Internet connection).

Set-up seems straight forward enough - install the Orb software on your PC (sorry no Apple Mac support appears to be available), tweak Orb by telling it what media it can transmit from your PC, connect to the Orb website from your remote device and access your media - wherever you are!

The remote device needs to ave a media player which supports one of the provided formats. However Orb have catered for most, especially mobile devices. Your media player needs to support Real Media formats, Windows Media formats, or 3GP format (mobile phones).

Your base PC needs a fair spec to operate with Orb. The site specs a 2.4Ghz Intel Pentium IV processor or equivalent and at least 512MB of RAM. A list of devices that Orb works with are provided on the site.

Download the software and create an account now from Orb.com
