Nintendo Wii Low Down

It has been information overload this week with the E3 show in LA. We’ve gathered the essential (confirmed) news about the Nintendo Wii in to one manageable chunk.
It was reported that the revolutionary new console was the most popular at the Electronic Entertainment Expo ‘06 - and many videos taken from the show floor showed a stampede of people heading for the Nintendo area as the doors opened in the morning!
The Hardware
The Nintendo Wii console is as thin as three DVDs stacked together. The Wii boasts 512 MB of internal flash memory, two USB 2.0 ports and built-in Wi-Fi capability. A bay for an SD memory card will let players expand the internal flash memory.
The small base unit (in comparison to the Xbox 360 and PS3) will be available in vaious colours to match your lifestyle. The supplied remote matches the colour, and is wireless. The wireless signal can be detected within 10 meters of the console.
The single slot media drive will accept both standard 12cm (DVD) discs and the GameCube’s 8cm discs.
The console’s ports include: four ports for classic Nintendo GameCube controllers (including the Bongos!). Two slots for Nintendo GameCube Memory Cards. An AV Multi-output port for component, composite or S-video.
Various official Nintendo peripherals will be available, that integrate with the main Wii remote.
- The Wii Remote controller includes a three-axis motion sensor. The Wii Remote also includes a speaker, rumble feature and expansion port, and can be used as a pointer within 5 meters of the screen. The Wii Remote has a power switch, plus pad, A, B, Minus, Home, 1 and 2 buttons. The Nunchuk controller includes an analog control stick and C and Z buttons.
- The Nunchuk controller which pairs up with the remote to offer a more traditional analogue control stick.
- A Wii Virtual Controller joypad for use with the virtual console SNES back-catalogue games.
- A zapper gun, which provides space for the Wii remote to slot in - perfect for shooting ducks!
Networking
The console can connect wirelessly using IEEE 802.11b/g, or with a USB 2.0 LAN adaptor.
The Nintendo Wii Wi-Fi service will not feature a standard interface like Xbox Live. In much the same way as the Nintendo DS hand held it has been confirmed that the Wii will utilize a Friend Code system just like the DS.
In this system’s current implementation on the DS, each Wi-Fi enabled game carries with it a unique ID called a Friend Code. To play with your friends, you must each register the other’s Friend Code in the game. This system has been met with some criticism in comparison to Xbox Live since it does not employ a single unifying Friend Code, and codes must be entered on a game-by-game basis.
The console will always be online, even when powered off (standby). This quiet time is used to update games, such as adding new features, characters, and even gifts for you!
The Software
Lots of sequels, but more important some new titles making use of the controller. Nintendo announced the launch titles at E3.
Further videos of games available to play at E3 were compiled at xfm.net. A partial list also provides an over view of the 3rd party titles already in the works.
As reported earlier this week, the Wii will also make use of it’s Internet connection for the built-in Opera web browser.
The Virtual Console
The Wii has a built in emulator for a huge back catalogue of titles, from both Nintendo and third parties. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata confirmed Sega Genesis and Hudson TurboGrafx/PC-Engine titles would be downloadable via Wii’s Virtual Console service.
Already confirmed are 100 titles from publisher Hudson.
The Cost
The base unit console, although nothing official, has been said to cost $249 - thanks to the value bring printed in EGM. Others in the industry have suggested that Nintendo will follow in their tried and tested $199 price point as used for every other console they have launched.
Once you have your console, the estimated prices for the Virtual Console games are “a few dollars for NES, $5 for SNES and $10 for N64″.
The cost of new titles for the console have yet to be announced.

I always support and believe in the underdogs, I knew Nintendo was going on the right track. Plus, I heard about the specs for the Playstation 3 controller, from what I heard about it, I am highly dissappointed and shocked! First off, the controller is still the same, plus, they ripped off Nintendo’s motion sensor idea! Playstation is still doing the same old trick. Can’t they think of some ideas on their own instead of ripping off other people’s ideas?

what does the wii-mote run on?? Like AA batteries or is there a charging station??? It will really suck if it was AA batteries
The Wii remote runs on two AA batteries. No charging station from Nintendo has been mentioned. Maybe this could be a nifty third party add-on?
To all those complaining about Sony “ripping off” Nintendo: Companies following other companies examples is good for YOU, the consumer. Sony “ripped off” Nintendo making the PS3 that much better. Now let’s say Sony came up with something innovative for their system and Nintendo “ripped off” Sony. Then there would be two systems that were twice as good as they would be if they hadn’t “ripped off” other companies and it comes at no cost to YOU, THE CONSUMER. If anything it would LOWER the prices of both systems because companies have to charge less when they are fiercely competing. The Nintendo may even end up being improved in response to the “rip off”. And let’s say, in YOUR perfect world, Nintendo had no competition at all. In that case, you’d be paying $900 for the Wii because you’d have no other console options. Shut up and sit down.

Ive Always gone with nintendo from the 64 til…now and i wii..ll cont..to for the coming years although people said nintendo was outleagued by the XBOX and the PS2 the gamecube and its skimpy library of games because even though your console kicks ass if you dont have good games that take advantage of its features than whats the point

When i heard of the sony controller i was highly upset about them bitting off of nintendos idea, But when you think ABOUT IT THEY HAVE BEEN DOING IT FOR SO LONG. They always copy off of nintendo, they did it with the backward compatibility on the PS2, they did it with the rumble pak, and with the handheld part. and for SHALASHASKA, yea it would be good to take eachothers ideas to make each system better only if your on the same team.buit they’re not, they’re competing. would you like it if you thought of an invention of something and wanted to make money of it and one of your freinds or someone took your idea from you and made their own money off it instead? no you would be mad as hell so i think you are the one that needs to shut up and sit down. The 360 wireless remote have rechargable kits for them and you just plug them into the usb port when they need to be charged. You can still play while they are charged. It’s not a big deal. Hopefully they’ll have an option like that for the Wii.

What do people get out of being fanboys? I can never understand it, no matter how hard I try. As a consumer I look out for me, not for the companies. If they want to steal good ideas from eachother, let them. It means that I, in the end get a better product. Nintendo doesn’t love their fans. Neither does Microsoft or Sony. They’re corporations and they just want you to buy their stuff so they can make money.
As for me I’m probably going to end up with all three consosoles this generation because they are each appealing in some way.

I think the Wii will be a great system; however, the blue-ray and cell processor is worth the high pricetag on the PS3. If anyone knows anything about the cell processor - SONY along with IBM and Toshiba invented it and based on its perfermance, experts say it will replace all processors as we know it.. Educate yourself. Also, blue-ray - being 50 Gb discs - is only going on the Sony - think of the possibilities. Oh and one more thing. Nintendo only announced using disc technology after the Sony Playstation’s success - so it turns out the Nintendo might do a little copy-cating in themselves. I think I will buy both the Wii and the PS3.
i think that it is pretty good looing and that now all consoles will have wirelwess controllers but theres one problem you will have to rmeber were you left the controler at.
You said that the prices for games have not been announced. This is untrue. While we don’t know the specifics, Satoru Iwata (Nintendo’s President) stated that all first party titles would be priced at $50 or less (see link). With Mario, Zelda and Metroid at those prices, third party developers will surely follow Nintendo’s lead, making games for the Wii $10-20 cheaper than the average 360 or PS3 game.

If YOU knew anything about the Cell processor, you would know it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Ken Kutaragi of Sony already propositioned Steve Jobs to use the Cell Processor in their Macs, and Steve shot him down:

I believe the first console disc system was the CD-i, a collaboration of Nintendo and Philips.
Also, if anybody says Microsoft or Logitech invented the motion sensing controller, look up the Powerglove.

1.nintendo were the first to have the idea of using disks, they were designing a cd disk add on for the snes, it was going to be called the,OMFG………..the playstation add on. nintendo didnt have experience in making games that ran on disks so they got a little company called sony to help them, sony agreed and started to design this new add on that could hold more than a snes cartrige (so bigger games) sony got in an argument with nintendo about the price of the add on, as sony wanted the price to be higher, nintendo refused and sony left, and in their anger tried at their own system and guess wot. they even called their new console the playstation! wot copy cats! nintendo stuck with their cartriges for one more game generation, the playstation sold more than the nintendo 64. Even though the nintendo had much much much better and more inovative and fun games like legend of zelda, mario, smash bros, and countless other amazingly fun games that you can still play on without feeling the games are low standard or whatever. and all sony do is upgrade their already created games (by upgrade i mean jack up the graphics) while nintendo come up with more and more completely different games. like wii sports, that looks well fun. and anyway wots to like about the playstation, i mean they werent there at the beggining, there games suck u no wot, and the playstation 2 sucked the most, it wasnt the most powerful console (the xbox takes this place by miles) and the games were poo! Well, “Finbaloid”, I was a little interested in your reply at first, i thought “maybe this guy actually has a brain unlike most of these people who clearly havent got a clue what theyre talking about” but then i read the “60 GB hard drive Hd games, blue ray discs etc” and realised that you really havent got a clue what youre talking about and you used something you said earlier to get out of going into any more details that you really just dont know about and probably dont care about. The PS3 is gonna have absolutely amazing graphics, fair enough, but Nintendo is going in a completely different direction with the Wii, the graphics will be worse but it will give people an entirely different way to play games. As for everyone being an 11 year old, your name on this is Finbaloid… I dont know if that means something or what but if i was introduced to an adult called Finbaloid i just dont think i could ever respect them. Also, it makes me laugh that people come on these forums slagging people off for being nintendo fanboys when theyre quite clearly sony fanboys themselves.

1. Whether the Nintendo fanboys buy the Wii is none of anyone’s bussiness. I have the 360 and i don’t really see anything to be extremly joyous over. The ps3? well that’s yet to be tested, but the wii? People! realize that this is a huge even for Nintendo lovers or fanboys, if you don’t care for it then just don’t buy it and nove on with your bitter lives.

Yes your hypothesis is interesting. Although some of us take video games for what they are ” an unrealistic form of entertainment” some like your self maybe living in an imaginary world of action and neverending battles with aliens. As for my self, well I have had 2 tours in Afghanistan, and im on my 3rd one in Iraq and trust me, all i want to do when i play video games is play something that takes my mind of the harsh reality some of you dream about in your little not so realistic games. Nintendo’s titles maybe childish to you but they are entertaining and are what they are, “GAMES”. SO in conclusion leave the buying choices to their corresponding game console fans.
I myself am a nintendo fan, and i have stuck by them since the Gameboy colour (my first nintendo console)
I loved it, then i got the Gameboy Advance, then a Gamecube, then a GBA SP and finally a Nintendo DS. But guess what! if YOU enjoy playing on a Gamecube, or a playstation, or a DS, or a PSP it does NOT matter if somebody else thinks it rubbish, as long as you enjoy it it doesn’t matter if somebody thinks otherwise because YOU LIKE IT.

In response all i can say is that i still support the wii and already own a xbox 360 but i am just annoyed about comments that slag ps3 off when nobody knows whats going to happen.THe ps3 could flop and wii could sell the most or vice versa.I wish that SOME of the nintendo fanboys would act their age.
Why are we still argueing anyway? Nintendo has taken such a huge step aside with the Wii that you just can’t compare them with sony/micro anymore.
It’s like saying ‘OMG that microsoft mouse sucks! I think the logitech KEYBOARd is SOO MUCH BETTER!’…. I personally use both. But some people (e.g. tech-noobs) just use the mouse, whilst others (e.g. supernerds!) just use the keyboard.

I am going to get a wii, but I don’t want to critisise the ps3, because it could be a good console. I have been a Nintendo fan since the game boy, the wii is definetly a GREAT idea.

i think the wii is an interesting console, the question of whether the wii or 360 or ps3 is better is pointless, for, the wii and 360 are two worlds apart. you cannot compare a song to a movie, and likewise you cannot compare a wii with a 360 or ps3. the wii is an innovative concept that has been made to appeal to everyone, regardless of age and gaming preferences. the wii is a fun console made to enertain and interest people, nintendo have always been keen to show off their new ideas (which is really good), though not everyone may like it, it still shows that in a market where ideas have become repetitive and creativity has ceased it is refreshing to see some new concepts. this is not to say that the xbox is not good, it too is a spectacular console in its own right, yes it does have magnificent graphics. one point that i feel i must mention is that sony do not seem to have a selling point that will atract the mainstream market, i do not think many people (aside from diehard playstation fans) will be eager to spend over £500 on a console, especially when there is not much difference between an xbox and ps3, as, most of the games will be released on both, sony has only had a few games that a only sony releases, whereas nintendo have had a lot(mario,zelda,smash bros,pokemon), for instance one of the most played games resident evil [5] will be released on the xbox. instead of buying a ps3 you could purchase a 360 and wii. the ps3 may be a hit, but we will only see when it releases next year, and by then, people may already be happy with their 360/wii.
my playstation2 was rubish it crached two monthes after i got it ive stuck with intendo ever since i think sony blows i could kill them the idiots they copied intendo in every way they just cant think up there oun ideas its hardelly different two the playstation 2 im getting a wii and that wiil be much better than stupid playstation 3 if you get a playstation 3 yove made a big mastake!

Sony’s PS3 is almost identical to it’s previous model, the PS2. The only difference is the motion sensor controller and slightly enhanced resolution, now, for the Wii, I’m sure you all know the many upgrades so I won’t bore you by telling you them so I’ll skip to the 360. The 360 has wireless controllers, an insane amount of memory, a faster hard drive and a much better resolution than the previous model. For the next few years, I reckon the battle is going to be between Nintendo and Microsoft this time with Sony trailing sadly behind. As comparison to the last generation, when it was the Gamecube who no-one seemed to want, as for the poor library of games… I think that was down to it having less buttons than the other two.
And just for those who haven’t realised this yet, I’ll give you a list of each console’s buttons.
XBox - A - B - X - Y - L - R - Black - White (I might actually be missing a couple, the Analogue sticks could be buttons too, correct me if I’m wrong)
PS2 - X - Square - Circle - Triangle - R1 - R2 - R3 - L1 - L2 - L3
Gamecube - A - B - X - Y - L - R (In some cases the C-Stick could be used as buttons aswell but I think that was only in the Zelda games from the N64)
Sony could be in trouble this year console-wise, they sell TV’s and such aswell so they ain’t gonna go bust if their console doesn’t sell as well, so don’t get your hopes up. This also means that no matter how much you may hate Sony, they aren’t gonna pull out of the Console Wars and neight will Microsoft, since they sell computers and programmes and such. So the real threat is to Nintendo, they rely solely on their games and consoles and without that they’re goners.
If you want my opinion, I think we should all buy things from Nintendo, they need to survive, if this generation sells loads then it permits at least one screw-up for the next generation and if you want lots of new and interesting ideas from the zany Japanese company then I suggest you do all you can to keep them afloat.

This info I’m about to say I’ve only heard so bare with me here.
Sony has announced that the PS3 will be their last console and they will only add upgrades to it. Like Nintendo did with their GCN by adding the ability to play Gameboy games on the big screen. The item was called the Gameboy Player.
Like I said this is uncomfirmed.

The more competition the better, welcome back Nintend!! Look what the average consumer has benefitted from already by this latest Nintendo incarnation “Wii” (the names strangely growing on me)…dont doubt for a second that both Sony and Microsoft will be watching the Wiis sales figures and public resonse like hawks over the next few months. If the Wii succeeds we (us consumer type blokes) will be the real winners. Look what Microsoft and Sony thought they could get away with prior to the Wii. Xbox 360 and PS3 are upgrades nothing more - good upgrades, expensive but undeniably good. A significant market share shifting back over to Wii will highlight the need for the console industry to be more innovative in the future, im sure if Wii does well the next generation of consoles will be radically different. Personally ive never owned an Xbox, mostly cos ive been living in japan for 5 years and theres almost no point getting it over here, as japanese tend to ignore it and games are few and far between. Ive always gone for the playstation. the first one was brilliant, the second a disappointment and is used almost exclusively in my household as a DVD player. Now im converting, its Wii for me this time, cant be assed to fork out that much money for PS3, maybe later if all the movies start coming out on blue ray, i dunno.
Whats the odds on for the next generation of consoles, they all have a Wii-esqe controller system. The Wii is the first console to get me excited since the super nes. Playstaion3 and the x360 are great machines but i’ve played their games for so long i want something new.

I have got to say, i have bin sticking with xbox all the way, but when i heard about the wii’s interactivity i automatically switched, i coudnt care less if the ps3 copies wii, because nintendo will still b proud that it was their initial design and im realli looking forward to getting one for christmas if they r in stock lol
…and yes it is a gimmick. It’s also quite innovative as far as the actual gaming experience is concerned. This is why, regardless of whether you sit in the MS or Sony camp, you can own the Wii without being a traitor, and probably will own it as a suppliment to your main console. Lets face it, most people will own at least 2 of the 3 and the Wii is always one of them (ok, someone is going to now say that they’ll own Xbox 360 and PS3 without Wii, but in reality this is unlikely, if you can afford the main two, you’ll also stretch to the wii).
In the long run, this will make Nintendo the winner this time around. Sure it’s not as technically advanced as the other two, but it doesn’t need to be.
What I need to do is replicate this idea and create a gadget that works on all 3 consoles. Then everyone buys a couple of them and I become very rich (if only!)

I will never buy a 360 or ps3 simply because i hate big companies. when these global companies reach the top in all fields of electronics we (the consumer) will have to pay through the ass for stuff which doesnt push the boundaries of the market. And as for blue ray and hd dvds you now where you can stick them. Dvds are more than my eyes require, crisp flowing pictures with 5.1 surround why pay more.

understand this, like most people who do research online for consles i know what i want, i bought the 360 as soon as it came out(£350) and what happened?…………it crashed first day, so i took it back and got a refund, ive got a custom pc so im happy, but 4 weeks ago i thought, hey ill give xbox 360 anothergo, guess what?……………it crashed first day! so microsoft whos 360 feels cheap can forget it.
so then ps3, well i want a hd dvd(blu ray) but i also want games and the only good games ps have it metal gear solid after that theres nothing, so then the nintendo wii, its fresh, for the REAL gamers out there the pc and mouse combination is much better than a controller, so if nintendo can beat that then hats off to them, imagine mario kart online? we kow its going to be the DON

i’ve stuck with nintendo since day one. was gutted that the ps1, a blatantly inferior console romped to victory (the power of advertising! vs gullible fools and their money) and then the same thing happened with the ps2, again an inferior console.(see res evil 4) i am hoping the Wii will have the backing and games library it so richly deserves and if it does, then who knows maybe the ps will die a slow and painful death. (fingers crossed). why? the ps1 launched a deluge of unbelievieably bad games onto the market (quoting a survey done at the time) ps1. a man who knows nothing about games buys a ps1 and then buys a game. 80% chance of buying an absolute stinker. same man buys a n64. 80% chance of buying a great game.
i dislike what sony did to the gaming industry for years by allowing trash to be distributed on its systems, then they denied there was a problem with the ps2 (the old disk read error) when there obviously was. the sony coorporations sole interest in the market is money. they have no interest in advancing gaming. as for copying. well, anolog stick - nintendo, rumble pack- nintendo, disk player - nintendo, interactive controller- nintendo.
i have had my issues with nintendo, namely lack of games and lack of support. they do however look to the future and try to develop industry leading ideas, and, no matter what you say about them being kiddie games they are without doubt the most fun.

Going way back up this list, which seems be getting mad! When i was a teen i was well into the SNES, and according to storys then about the next console sony was ment to be working with nintendo to create a cd console, then that seemed fall apart and sony created the play station because they had the cd tech, leaving nintendo hi and dry.
Now in my 20’s i didnt realy get into the playstation2 i bought, but looking at the wii how you play seems more interesting and to be able to download youshi go karting etc will be ace, plus no way paying sony ps3 price

I have always liked Nintendo & Sega systems since my 2D teenage gaming years.. I have a gamecube at the moment. It is my first console since I had a snes in 1995… I have just got back into gaming after 12 years, although I have never been hardcore. When the PlayStation came out gaming lost its appeal to me. I like the playability that Nintendo have always offerd. In time I think I will probably get the new wii system. Its the Nintendo titles that keep Nintendo fans coming back time after time. Nintendo have always been pure games machines. I like the thought of the fact I can play Gamecube games on the wii & even download still much loved and highly addictive snes & n64 games. That has got to be a bonus having 4 console compatibility!! Also unlike other company’s Nintendo seem to make previous pheripials for there consoles compatible too… Its not just down to graphics when playing a game console although it is a big part it seems today. I recon I will get as much fun from playing snes games as I will from a GC game… For me its all good… I am a bit unsure about the new type of control system it could be good it could be bad but it is definitely different.. Judging by Nintendo’s past experience in making good systems & keeping gamers happy Wii would be the choice for me
I’ve always liked X Box and nintendo, but never Play Station. i’ve heared that you can buy a 360 AND a Wii for the same prise as a PS3, and the 360 is better than PS3 alone. so the desision is very clear get a Wii and 360 and don’t wiast ur money on a crap PS3.
the wii looks cool i wanna get one but everywere is like sold out so i gots to wait. i think the virtual console thinh is cool i wanna download some old titles that i never got to play like mario 64 or metroid 1 and stuff ike that. i also really like the way the remote works i got to use it yesterday at a friends house and it worked really well, much better and easier than i thought and i was only playing for like 5 minutes! all the games look innovative and different and red steel and tp look the best at the moment, wii sports is also fun. the console looks real good as well , i like that its small so its easy to put away and you dont need 3 tables to play it on. lol thanks for the lowdown.

I’ve always found Nintendo games more “group” friendly with their games a lot of fun. Whereas PS and XBOX games have a much more serious feel to them. PS didn’t rip off nintendo’s “idea” for a motion sensor controller because its been about and used for years…just nobody took any notice of it. I think that the PS3 is going to do fine as people will chose it as part of an integrated entertainment system, whereas the wii will be chosen simply for its gaming capability. Unless nintendo’s games are shit then i see no reason for it to fail. They’re being punted for over £400 on ebay the now so that says somethng

Sony did rip off Nintendo’s idea and have done for years. but its a tilt sensor so not as complex as a motion sensor. but i must admit. as much as i didnt like the idea of sony doing a wii pad type thing in a way its a good thing. it means they like the idea so they want to use it. and it means thay can offer something other than a rumble. but it does annoy me when you read in mags that the pad is a total revolution when it really aint lol. i mean come on. its only a tilt motion so not that great at all!
and as for the Wii. its awesome! nintendo didnt do that well after the N64 wasnt quite as big as they hoped. but it looks like the Wii is doing them good. just shows that innovation does sell and that nintendo know what people want. its not all about the power and how real looking you can make a game
