Japan Re-invents The Door

Inventors in Japan have come up with a new way of putting a door in a room - and only the required parts open.

The concept is great, but the prototype still needs a bit of work. It’s being shown off at the Expo for small and midsize companies in the video report below:

The door works by using infrared sensors on the 70 slats which form the door. Putting an object infront of them causes a reaction of the slat sliding out of the way.

The jist of the report suggests that this type of door would be great in cooled spaces, where it can be very expensive to cool them down again once the cold escapes, so this can save money. Other examples are in hospitals - although the speed of this door prototype opening might be a bit worrying!
