Nintendo Wii Mods & Hacks roundup

wii

Here's a quick round up of some of the best mods and hacks that have cropped up over the last few months for the Nintendo Wii.

Cases

wii zelda caseLet's get started with the Legend of Zelda Console Mod perfect for those ultimate Nintendo fanboys which as of today is currently fetching just over $1200 on eBay via Digg

The Wii console itself is airbrushed in an 18 step process and finished with a special "hammered" black texture to really set off the medieval theme (something like a stone wall in castle). The stand was color-matched to be the same gold as ZELDA game cartridges of the Nintendo 64. It was then airbrushed with the same 18 step process. The console buttons and Gamecube port faceplate were also painted in this same brilliant gold

wii retro skinThere are currently 157 Wii skins over at DecalGirl.com from carbon fiber to basketballs and flames. Our favorite is the retro wii skin costing $14.99, perfect for playing old skool NES games on the virtual console channel.

The skins are applied by sticking them to your Wii. If you get bored with one design, you peel it off, and apply a new one. Finally a way to get a different coloured Wii like Nintendo originally showed off years back?

wii case chromeChrome out your Wii and get some extra functionality like an....erm mirror. If you're cramped for space in your room having a Wii come Mirror is a sure space saver. The chromed up look also makes for a blinged-out look if that's your bag. Via Kotaku

Wiimote & Controller mods

wiimote handcuffsWii strap not strong enough? You could always handcuff the Wiimote to your arm which should stop it flying off into your 60" plasma

wiimote gunNo doubt there will be an official gun controller at some point, but in the meantime you could always hack the wiimote into a gun yourself!

The Wii remote power glove hack via HackedGadgets, The prototype hybrid controller uses specially mounted triggers on the thumb and middle finger to simulate the A and B buttons, and even includes an opening for the nunchuck attachment in the back, check the YouTube video below.

Modded original NES and SNES controllers work wirelessly with Wii - For the ultimate nostalgic feeling playing games on the virtual console how about a wireless transmitter in the old NES and SNES controllers? The wireless receiver module is constructed via a Gamecube wire with iPod Mini batteries powering the controllers. Via Nintendo Wii Fanboy

Internal Wavebird receiver mod - A mod to mount the Wavebird receiver insider the Wii so there are no unsightly dongles sticking outside of the case. You can still use a wired controller in the modified ports too if the batteries run out mid game. These hackers think of everything. Via Max console forums

wiimote multicolourBright buttons multicoloured for each player - The mod took Sir crx around 3 hours to do but certainly helps liven up and differentiate each wiimote, Via Max console forums

Wiimote laser tag - Bluetooth and wiimotes combine to allow laser quest in your own home. You need two sensor bars strapped to yourself, a PC with bluetooth and 2 Wiimotes, Glovepie and a couch to hide behind.

Wii controlled "smart home" - Using the Wiimote and an onscreen flash interface through the Wii this uber setup allows central control of lights, heating, cameras and music. Lots more detail is available at LiquidIce's site Check the YouTube video below to see this in action:

Homebrew and Imports

Gamecube homebrew & emulators - Tutorial on the required Datel launcher allowing the use of homebrew and emulation can be found at DCEmu.

Play US Gamecube games on PAL without freeloader - This trick lets PAL Wii owners play NTSC Gamecube games without using a freeloader or action replay. It involves having a PAL Gamecube disc and hitting eject and A at the same time whilst hovering over start. Video and more details at Siliconera.com

Hardware Hacks

Wii laptop - Contains a 16:9 7" LCD screen, a built in sensor bar and built in power supply and comes in at 8.5 x 7.7 x 2 inches. Loads more info and a gallery of this mad mod over at Engadget .

Wii external antenna
- Upgrade your wireless range with a bigger and more powerful external antenna. Step by step instructions with photos over at Informit.com.

Make your own component cable - Struggling to get your hands on a component cable? This article details how to turn your existing composite cable into a component cable with some alligator & paper clips, screwdriver, tape and wire strippers. Full tutorial at Wii like to podcast.

Please do not express your opinion in a vulgar way. Different people like different consoles: I like the PS3 for it's power and it's style; I like the 360 for it's features and it's power as well; I like the Wii for it's concept and it's ideas.

Spamming is not a way to get ideas into other peoples' heads, it's just a way of showing your weakness: that you can't speak reasonably and discuss something in a civilised manner.

This blog is for everybody, including people under 18. So talking about things for adults, being racist (even worse) and using bad language is not acceptable.

Please either speak correctly or you will not be allowed to comment any more...

Nice collection of this stuff. I think I'll go check it all out now...

Very cool. In Canada, some popular artists and musicians have modded several Wiis and Nintendo has put them up for grabs as part of an online contest called the Art of Wii.

Interesting about the component cable I'm tempted to give that a try. The smart home and laptop are pretty impressive too!

Better way to make more permanant componant cables that are far more useful.

You missed http://www.wiimotemods.com. There's plenty of mods relating to the wiimote with great pictures to show how its done.

my names says it all

yeah fuck the wii its crap

i have to admit is the wii is pretty horrible xbox360 for ever

two words for the wiii

DOO DOO

the only was i can have fun with the wii is using the "wiimote" as a vibrater

Zelda Case, Get a fucking life!'s picture

Zelda Case mod!! Zelda Case mod!

Why not get a "Gay Men having Bum Sex" case mod, surely thats more suitable for you gay boys!

Get a life (and a wife) you nonces!

Gamerner, whilst you are pretty gay / a geek, the xbox360 is forever! (not for ever)!

Lazybond is gay!

And so is 1234-5432-2322-1232 (you know who I'm talking too)

you say "'Gay Men having Bum Sex' case mod" like it's a bad thing...

post 13 is blastfamous its artistic just cause you in the closet dosnt mean you can bash other peoples talent your taking petty cheap shots cause not one can see you your scum the person/persons who made that case put there time and effort into art you on the other hand sit at home with no talent and a chronic masterbation problem wakeup and smack your self try to do somthing creative and then judge how you spend you time

Hmm, Its a great shame that the wii is being so closed about allowing hacks and mods on the system. Homebrew is often a great way to expand the uses of a console. Running Gamecube homebrew is great but I would love to see what clever people could do with the wiimote at home.

As for the obvious hatred towards the wii, I struggle to see what somebody elses interest in the wii has to do with you. Not interested in the wii because you think it has poor graphics or is overhyped or for any other reasons that you might not like it.................thats fine but why do you click on a link about it then? And why spend time passing comments?

I dont know about you but my time is too important for me to spend it talking about things I dont like, to people Im not fond of.

c) Wii Sports Baseball
d) Lazybond
e) the gayer who posted comment 19
f) Russel Grant (Google him)

Funny, the ones who bash the wii are the guys who live on their consoles playing solo (just like their sex lives) if not for xbox live and internet dating they'd never meet anyone to play with.
I hope cyber sex and rosie palm and her five finger band keep you satisfied, as for me I perfer to play with a partner, or a group for that matter! The wii isn't for the 'hardcore' gamer (though, there isn't anything hardcore about gamers) but its great for social gatherings, I suppose that's why you hate it though, when you only know your friends and loved ones by their screen name, a social console such as the wii just doesn't do anything for you.

Wow, these mods look pretty cool. I actually like the chrome one surprisingly... I agree with the above comment though; the Wii is best for groups of people, but there are some great 1 player games too!
