Emtec S800 HDD Movie Cube

This is the age of multimedia entertainment – there is no denying that. Though we still have a lot of different gadgets for specific purposes, we are seeing multi-functional gadgets more and more. This Christmas, if you are looking for a multimedia toy that can give you great value for your money, look no further than the Emtec S800 HDD Movie Cube.
This baby packs a powerful punch with its hosts of features. It has a whopping 500G of storage (yeah, with all that multimedia files you have, even this amount might not seem big after a while) and has a built-in hybrid analogue and DVB tuner. How does 500G translate in terms of number of files? You can expect to store about 180,000 photos, the same number of songs, or about 600 full length films. Not bad!
As for the formats and connections supported, the S800 seems to be pretty robust. It gets Scart, USB and HDMI connectivity, as well as DivX playback. What excites me about the S800 is the fact that you can connect it to your network at home, either through the Ethernet 10/100 or WiFi connection. This means that you can access and manipulate your files through your laptop or other networked device.
But wait, there’s more! The S800 can function as a recorder and converter as well! You can record your favourite TV programmes so that you can store them for those inevitable TV marathons. You can even spruce up your old DVD or video films by converting them into better digital formats.
Convinced yet? So how much is the S800 going to set you back? Rumour has it that Dixon’s will be selling it this December for £229.99.

I have struggled with the thing for 8 hours now and beleive me. Nothing really works the way it should work. The remote is such low quality it only works when pointed in a direct line with the device. Digital tv can not be connected because it doesnt have a smart card slot. It is impossible to upload files from a laptop into the device by the wifi function. Only thing that works is the internet radio. But if you want to listen you do need to see a ugly ip-code screen when doing so. The quality of the menu makes me remember those first 8bit game consoles. Please do not buy this as a xmas gift for any one, it is a horrible mistake.
